Santorini is often celebrated for its whitewashed villages, blue-domed churches, dramatic caldera views, and unforgettable sunsets. It is easy to spend your days wandering the cliffside streets of Oia, relaxing by the sea, or enjoying long dinners overlooking the Aegean. Yet beyond the postcard-perfect beauty lies one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Greece — and a place that should not be missed while visiting the island.

Located on the southern coast of Santorini, the ancient site of Akrotiri offers travelers the chance to step back thousands of years into the island’s fascinating past. Often referred to as the “Pompeii of the Aegean,” Akrotiri is considered one of the most significant prehistoric settlements ever discovered in the Mediterranean.

The Discovery of the Akrotiri Ruins

The excavations at Akrotiri first began in the late 19th century under the French Archaeological School of Athens and continue to this day. What archaeologists uncovered was an incredibly advanced Bronze Age settlement linked to the Minoan civilization, dating back more than 3,500 years. The ancient city featured multi-story buildings, sophisticated drainage systems, vibrant frescoes, and evidence of a thriving port city that once connected Santorini to the wider Aegean world.

Around 1600 BC, the massive volcanic eruption of Thera dramatically changed the island forever. Layers of volcanic ash buried Akrotiri, preserving much of the settlement beneath the surface for centuries. Remarkably, very few human remains were discovered, leading many historians to believe that residents may have evacuated following a series of earthquakes before the catastrophic eruption occurred.

Akrotiri Archaeological Finds

Throughout the years the excavations continued, and it is open to the public to view. What has been excavated? Ash actually covers and protects, and Akrotiri was covered in ash. You will find that it looks like time has stood still.  As objects are uncovered they are brought to the archaeological Museum of Thera.  However, at the Santorini ruins you can view the structures of buildings, rooms, staircases.  You will find tools, Akrotiri pottery and frescos.  The pottery production in ancient Akrotiri gives evidence to more information on daily life in ancient Akrotiri Santorini; all sizes of jars, containers, cooking pots, and vessels used for drinking and pouring.
